Embracing Change for the Greater Good

It is said
that “the only constant is change,” but in some organizations this notion is
fiercely resisted – regardless of the positive impact it could have on the
business as a whole.
Robert Coolidge
President & CEO
Just because
something has been done the same way for decades doesn’t make it the best way,
or the most efficient. Consider what the market would look like today if there were
no FedEx/UPS, Internet or other innovations that have dramatically changed the
way we do business.
In many
instances, people are threatened by the mere notion of change and how it could
affect their roles within an organization.
This is driven by insecurities and human nature to protection one’s
self.  Company leaders need to recognize that
these people may, without intent, be inhibiting progress to protect the world
they know.  Their reluctance to seek
better ways and embrace new ideas may provide temporary security, but in the
long run inhibit progress and a company’s overall future success.
Those
looking to make their corner of the world bigger, not better, are risking the
ongoing viability of their company’s success, as well as their own.  Leaders should trust their managers to make
sound decisions, but also validate to ensure they are doing right by the
business and not just themselves.  To
borrow a quote from President Ronald Reagan, which he used
frequently when discussing U.S. relations with the Soviet Union: “doveryai, no proveryai or “trust, but verify.”
Businesses
that refuse to evolve and evaluate different options to enhance their
operations will quickly become irrelevant and outdated.  This cannot be more evident than in supply
chain logistics.  Being innovative and
forthcoming with change and progress will only enhance a company’s position in
the marketplace – it shows others they are leading the charge, not just
following others in front of them.  They
should look at what their competitors are doing to be successful and consider
mirroring those strategies, improving upon them if possible.  Company leaders should also listen to feedback
and make decisions for the good of the organization as a whole – not just for
what benefits one department or a single  business partner.
Change
should not occur for the sake of change; it must yield positive impact. Embracing
constructive change and keeping a close eye on operational decision making will
help ensure your business adapts and thrives well into the future.

Panasonic Transitions Majority of Spare Parts Supply Business to Encompass

Lawrenceville, Ga., March 18, 2014 — Encompass Supply Chain Solutions, Inc, a leading provider of forward and reverse logistics for a diverse range of electronics products and replacement parts, today announced that Panasonic has transferred close to 1,000 parts and accessories accounts to Encompass for parts supply.

In December, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company appointed Encompass to serve as a master distributor of both warranty and non-warranty spare parts and accessories for its comprehensive consumer electronics line. Panasonic has notified the bulk of its parts account holders that effective April 1, 2014, they should begin ordering parts through Encompass instead of Panasonic direct

These accounts will remain open with Panasonic through May 1, 2014, to allow for any backorders to be processed. After May 1, any remaining backorders will be cancelled and must be reordered through Encompass.

“Encompass is pleased to have the opportunity to provide further support to Panasonic and their aftermarket service customers,” saidRobert Coolidge, Encompass president & CEO. “Our core competency and singular focus is on the spare parts supply chain. By assisting Panasonic with their parts program, they can stay better focused on product innovation, which is their expertise.”

Brad Moszkiewicz, Panasonic Director of Service Delivery, said Panasonic is changing its parts distribution policies to streamline operations and improve customer satisfaction.

“Encompass has proven to be a strong partner fully capable of providing the same high level of support our service partners have come to expect,” said Moszkiewicz. “We are confident they will enhance and strengthen the Panasonic parts supply chain.”

Original Versus Generic Service Parts

The concept that generic products are just as good as
original manufacturer products definitely holds true – when you’re talking about
thumb tacks or yellow mustard perhaps. But when it comes to spare parts for
intricate electronics or appliance repair, can you really trust a knock
Robert Coolidge
President & CEO

off
just because it’s cheaper?

Some generic parts are sourced from the same ODM that makes
the genuine parts, so the generic version is easily seen as an attractive, less
costly option. However, many are also copied through reverse engineering,
potentially using inferior materials and processes.
With no way to tell exactly what you’re getting, the first
clue may not come until an unhappy consumer informs you that the high-end
refrigerator you just drove 20 miles to repair has failed again. Are generic
parts worth the risk of making multiple lengthy trips to a customer’s home due
to repeated part failure? Perhaps, but in the age of instant feedback on the
Internet, is it also worth the risk to your business reputation? While one
happy customer may tell two people about his/her experience, an unhappy
customer will tell the world.

No surprise, cutting corners usually doesn’t pay off in the
long run. It’s a practice that is likely to end up costing you more in time,
labor and parts expense. When Encompass is able to obtain original parts
directly from the OEM, that is always the preferred option for just this reason.
Managing defective parts is a drain on our resources and bottom line, but that
is secondary to the negative impact faulty parts can have on our brand and
customer relationships.

ISO Certification – Is It Worth the Investment?

ISO – the International Organization for Standardization – develops
globally-recognized rules and norms for products, services and best practices
to promote better operational effectiveness. ISO standards are intended to help
businesses reduce
costs and increase efficiency by minimizing waste and errors and increasing
productivity.
Robert Coolidge
President & CEO
The ISO 9000 standards address
quality management and are among the most popular implemented by businesses.
ISO 9001 is the only ISO 9000 standard that can be certified to, and
essentially helps ensure that customers receive good quality, consistent
products and services. It is based on a number of quality management principles,
including a strong customer focus, leadership involvement, process approach and
ongoing improvement. Other ISO certifications are industry specific, such as
food safety, automotive and medical devices, but are still based on the ISO
9000 quality management standards.
The actual certification process
can cost thousands of dollars and take months to achieve. It requires an
enormous amount of procedural documentation and commitment to continual
measurement and improvement.
At a time when many businesses are still tracking costs to
the penny, how can you justify the time and expense to attain ISO certification?
Depending on the size and complexity of your operation, that upfront investment
could end up providing a much greater return in the long run. Benefits include:
·
Improved control
of operations
–
registered companies deliver more consistent products and services to their
customers, resulting in less waste and decreased costs.
·
Process
documentation
–  preservation
of knowledge and skills can more quickly be transferred to new employees,
reducing the learning curve.
·
Business
development
–
many industries require their vendors to be ISO certified. Plus, potential
customers will perceive your organization to be more proactive, disciplined,
trustworthy and able to provide higher levels of customer service.
·
Continual
improvement
–
ISO 9001 provides the tools to constantly enhance operational efficiency and improve
service. Required Quarterly Management Reviews go over key performance
indicators and defined action plans for standards not being met.
·
Staff
optimization
–
ensures employees are competent for tasks assigned.
·
Cross-functional
cooperation
–
certification involves all departments to minimize operational obstacles.
ISO certification can be daunting,
but there are many consulting firms available to help guide businesses through
the process. Hiring a consultant does not come cheap, but is probably the best
way to go to ensure compliance.
It’s certainly worth exploring certification
– in a competitive marketplace, it could give your organization an edge with
prospects, while greatly improving your internal operations.
