Ensuring Quality Aftermarket Support Amidst CE Brand Consolidation

Brand consolidation in the consumer electronics industry just took
another step forward with the recent announcement that Sharp has agreed to
license its prestigious name to Hisense. Sharp is the latest in a long line of
other manufacturers like Philips, Toshiba, Mitsubishi and Hitachi to enter into
this type of arrangement. With just a handful of global manufacturers now
dominating the U.S. Consumer Electronics market, consolidation could become
even more prevalent.
Robert Coolidge
President & CEO
As electronics manufacturing has shifted from the
U.S. to Mexico to the Asia-Pacific, many powerhouse brands like Zenith, Sylvania
and RCA have gone the way of the VCR. Many overseas manufacturers have since looked
to capitalize on the value of world-leading Consumer Electronics brands to
better penetrate the U.S. market. For manufacturers following this path, it is critical
that they protect the brand value of their new assets by ensuring a seamless
service experience.
While consumers may have loyalty to certain
electronics brands, that allegiance can be tenuous. The first time repair parts
aren’t available or they’re unable to find a servicer, their perception of a
once-coveted brand will likely plummet. With other strong brands ready to step
in as replacements, manufacturers have to stay on their game during the
post-sale period.
Manufacturers expanding in the U.S. should
leverage the service process as a differentiator and compelling reason to retain
brand loyalty. We in the service community must stay attuned to these
consolidations and maintain a role in aftermarket support to help deliver a consistent
service experience.
As long as manufacturers – along with parts suppliers,
warranty claims administrators and service networks – execute as team to
continue providing reliable product support, it shouldn’t matter what’s behind
the manufacturing curtain. With strong backing, the brand will have a much
better chance to retain its quality status in the minds of U.S. consumers.
Beyond the service experience, manufacturers now thriving
in the Consumer Electronics space are well diversified into other product
categories and are “owning the home” from the family room to the laundry room.
When 4k display becomes more mainstream, controlling content will also become a
key competitive factor.

With competition among Consumer Electronics manufacturers
tightening and the industry contracting in general, the most successful players
are fiercely protecting their brands and aggressively working to gain ever
greater wallet share.

Encompass to Expand South Florida Operation to Accommodate U.S. and Latin America Business Growth

Lawrenceville, Ga., July 23, 2015 — Encompass Supply Chain Solutions, Inc, a leading provider of forward and reverse logistics for a diverse range of finished goods and replacement parts, today announced it will double the size of its Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. distribution facility to support new business.

The added square footage is needed for the company’s continued expansion in the consumer electronics and major appliance parts market, as well as its growing supply chain management offering. Encompass provides comprehensive, end-to-end parts logistics and parts distribution services for a number of world-leading consumer brands, including Samsung, LG, Sony, Haier, Panasonic, Philips, Hewlett-Packard and several others.

The new space – contiguous to existing warehouse space – will also be used to support 3PL service for a global consumer electronics brand with which Encompass recently contracted.

The company additionally maintains a distribution and repair facility at its headquarters location in Lawrenceville, Ga., just north of Atlanta. Encompass’ current Ft. Lauderdale location comprises a distribution facility, along with purchasing, IT, customer support and other administrative functions. With its proximity to Latin America, the South Florida locale is also the company’s main distribution point for parts supply to this region.

Encompass President and CEO Robert Coolidge said the decision to expand follows a record-setting month of volume for the company. The extra space will be used to increase the company’s inventory position and accommodate additional operational staff. The company expects to hire five new warehouse employees.

“Increasing our footprint in the Southeast region will allow us to take advantage of numerous new business opportunities,” said Coolidge. “Additionally, the South Florida location is ideal for serving the Latin America market, while supplementing our Georgia distribution facility for domestic supply and enhancing service to our existing clients.

Encompass Chief Financial Officer Lanier Bivings added that the company’s strategy is to provide value beyond traditional parts distribution.

“Encompass offers our customers an alternative solution that shifts their fixed costs to us, while maintaining their service levels, reducing overall service costs and improving predictability. This approach is fueling our growth and is the differentiator that’s putting us on track for another record year.”

Five Strategies to a Highly-Effective RFP Response

When your organization is asked to respond to an RFP, the prospective client likely already believes you have the capabilities they need. But don’t blow this opportunity by assuming the sale and submitting a shoddy response.
Robert Coolidge President & CEO

      Robert Coolidge
      President & CEO

At Encompass, we are fortunate to have had the opportunity to participate in countless RFPs over the years.  I’ve seen virtually every format imaginable – from one to two basic pages in a Word document to sophisticated, automated tools.  In the end, we win some and lose some, but always view RFPs as a valuable learning opportunity.

A thoughtful, carefully crafted RFP response fully showcasing your organization’s capabilities and strengths can set you apart from the competition. If you’ve
made the short list to receive an RFP, here are five key strategies to creating a highly-effective response:

1.   Thoroughly Review the Client’s RFP Document – It may sound elementary, but before typing the first word, carefully read all of the client’s instructions and questions.  Most clients provide specific direction on how the response should be organized and answered.  Adhere to the requested format, and ensure all
questions are covered completely in your response – this is not the time to demonstrate your creativity by providing the client a response they didn’t ask for.

Many companies make the mistake of assuming they know what the client wants without taking the time to thoroughly read the proposal request. Submitting a
response that doesn’t follow the client’s outline or fully address their requirements will often be excluded from the next round of the RFP process simply
for not following instructions. If you have additional information you feel is essential to your response, include it as an appendix or attachment separate
from the main document.

2.  Brag on Your Company
– This is the perfect chance to sell your organization so don’t hold back. Consult with your internal subject matter experts to ensure you accurately capture the depth of your abilities for each of the client’s requirements – and do so with captivating detail.  At the same time, be wary of over promising and under delivering.  If you are awarded the business and can’t back up your claims of execution, you risk irreparable damage to your credibility – among many other issues (see #1 about thoroughly reviewing the client’s requirements).

 3.    Demonstrate Professionalism – Again, it may sound obvious, but before submitting your response, ensure your document is meticulously reviewed by someone other than the principle author for such basics as typos and grammatical errors.  Do not skip this step; even the best writers can miss mistakes after countless hours of preparation and reviewing.  Nothing conveys inadequacies and unprofessionalism like a document riddled with typos.  In addition, be sure to add a cover letter summarizing your competitive strengths as they specifically relate to the
client requirements.

 4.    Beat the Deadline – When possible, submit your response ahead of the stated deadline. This can help you outshine the competition by demonstrating your enthusiasm for the opportunity, depth of knowledge on the subject matter and ability to complete projects before they are due.  At the same time, be mindful not to rush through the response. It’s always better to meet the deadline with a complete and thoughtful response than to beat it with a careless one.

 5. Follow Up – Whether you win or lose, be gracious and thank the client for including your organization in the RFP process. If you are not awarded the business, ask why so you can obtain
critical feedback on your response. This input can help provide insight into how your organization’s capabilities may be lacking compared to the competition, as well as help you develop better quality RFPs in the future.
The RFP process can be cumbersome and time consuming, but can yield lucrative benefits. Even if your organization is not selected this time, you could leave a favorable impression for future bids and be first on the list for the next one. Also, keep in mind you could have a more immediate opportunity if the client’s project begins to falter.
Plus, people reviewing your RFP for one company may land at another where there is better opportunity.  Developing a high-quality, well thought out response is critical to your chances of winning – if not now, then maybe down the road.
